The Amazing Baler Encounter

Surfing at Sabang Beach, Baler

Even the best fall down sometimes but not every fall is a misery. That perhaps is the best lesson I've learned from my recent Baler adventure where every fall from surfing is definitely fun. Located in the northern east point of Luzon, a distinctively captivating place amplifies tourists with unforgettable moments from indefatigable surfing and a fun-filled food trip down to any boundless possibilities. Baler is truly a place of better things for all tourists from any walks of life.

Sabang Beach, Baler

Baler is just about five to six hours bus travel from Cubao, Manila and it is absolutely one of the ultimate beach destinations in the Philippines. In fact Yahoo! Southeast Asia describes the provincial capital of Aurora as one of the “top surf spots” in the country. For as high as nine feet, Baler waves serve as its main tourist asset which entices hundreds of surfers from all around the world to visit every surfing season from September to February of the year. But even during summer, the place is full-packed of visitors and even though the waves are standing low, surfing is still enjoyable.

Besides surfing, Baler is also identified for street food displayed in an innovative and unique presentation. To name one, “Baler Surfer Grill” definitely tops the list of must-try dining establishments in Sabang Beach. They serve seafood, steaks and barbeques grilled on a red Volkswagen beetle. I must say whoever thought about this concept is irrefutably genius.

Baler Surfer Grill

Food prices range from Php 100 to 200 and the servings are all praiseworthy. You get to dine in wooden tables and chairs surrounded by decorative surfboards while facing the beautiful seashore. The Volkswagen also plays good music which I’m sure you’ll enjoy while dining.

Top: Baby back ribs and chili chops - Php 200
Bottom: Fish barbeque with eggplant, tomato and siling labuyo - Php 200

And just 30 minutes motorcycle ride from Sabang Beach is the famous Diguisit Rock Formation of Baler. The view is undeniably picture perfect but getting to the foothill rocks is another story. I suggest that if you’re not wearing closed shoes, you must have at least a very sturdy flip flops as you’ll be walking on a spiky potholed corals and painful rock hills. But all the difficulties you’ll walk through are worth the struggle as you’re about to witness a breathtaking panoramic view of nature.

Baler is the kind of place where you can steadily relax and exceptionally enjoy at the same time. It is one of the greatest places I have been because it is just so seamless and distinctively amazing. :-)

  1. My friends and I went to Baler this weekend! Such a perfect surfing spot! :)

We rode a bus from Cubao going to Nueva Ecija. A relative told us that there are vans who can take you to Baler from Cabanatuan Bus Terminal. It's actually cheaper because we just paid P185 (bus) plus P220 (van).

By the way, if you're looking for a reliable tour guide in Baler (and if you're on tight budget), you may contact Kuya Edwin Alino at 09183564048. His services cost P800/day/city tour. Four (4) persons can fit in his tricycle. So, imagine paying only P200 each for a wonderful trip! ;)
